Encouraging Bible Verses

Sometimes the best encouragement is a reminder of what God has already said. Share these verses with a friend or keep them for yourself.

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

God spoke these words to Joshua as he stepped into leadership after Moses. The command to be strong and courageous is grounded in a promise, God is with you wherever you go. Courage here is not the absence of challenge but confidence in God's presence.

ReflectWhere is wherever you go for you this week? Name the places and invite God's presence into each one.

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

Galatians 6:9

Paul encourages readers to keep doing good even when results take time. He uses the image of a harvest that comes at just the right time. It is a reminder that faithful effort is never wasted.

ReflectWhat good work are you continuing, even if results have not appeared yet? Let this verse encourage you to keep going.

He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

Isaiah 40:29

This verse comes just before the famous promise about soaring on wings like eagles. God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. It shows that God's strength is a gift, freely given to those who need it.

ReflectWhere could you use God's power today? Consider asking him for strength before you begin.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Romans 8:28

Paul expresses confidence that God weaves everything together for good. The verse does not say every event is good, but that God works through all of it. It is a reassuring word for anyone looking back or looking ahead.

ReflectLooking back, can you see a time when God brought good out of something unexpected? Let that memory encourage you.

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Zephaniah 3:17

This verse describes God not only living among his people but delighting in them. The picture of God rejoicing over us with joyful songs is one of the most joyful in Scripture. It reveals a God who is glad to be near his children.

ReflectHow does it feel to imagine God singing over you with joy? Let that picture shape how you see yourself today.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Philippians 1:6

Paul is confident that the good work God began will be completed. Growth is a lifelong process, and God is committed to finishing it. It is an encouraging reminder that God does not leave projects half done.

ReflectWhat growth have you noticed in your life over the past year? Thank God for continuing his good work.

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

Deuteronomy 31:8

Moses encouraged Joshua with these words before Israel entered the promised land. God goes ahead, stays with, and never abandons his people. It is a promise that covers the road ahead and every step along the way.

ReflectHow does knowing God goes ahead of you, stays with you, and never leaves you cover every part of your journey?

So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord!

Psalm 31:24

This verse closes Psalm 31 with a call to courage. The strength it describes belongs to those who put their hope in the Lord. It is a fitting encouragement to share with friends and family.

A closer look

Going a little deeper.

Encouragement literally means to put courage into someone. These verses do exactly that by reminding readers of God's presence, his purposes, and his faithfulness to finish what he starts. They work well as daily reminders and as messages to send to others. A short verse in a text, a card, or a lunchbox note can lift someone's day more than we might expect. Consider choosing one verse from this page each week and sharing it with a different person. Over time, that small habit can encourage both the person receiving it and you.

In the early church, a man named Joseph was given the nickname Barnabas, which means son of encouragement. He was known for believing in people, introducing newcomers, and standing beside others when they needed support. His example shows that encouragement is a ministry anyone can practice.

Ways to keep these verses close. Choose one verse to read each morning this week and notice how it shapes your day. Write a favorite verse on a card for your desk, mirror, or nightstand. Share one verse with a friend or family member who might enjoy it, along with a short personal note.

A prayer
