Bible verses Before a Job Interview

A job interview is a meaningful step, a chance to share your gifts and learn about a new opportunity. These verses are good to read the night before or in the parking lot, a few quiet words to center your heart on God before you walk in.

Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.”

Exodus 4:12

Moses worried that he was not a good speaker, and he told God so. God answered with this promise, that he would be with Moses as he spoke and teach him what to say. Interviews are largely about speaking, answering questions clearly and honestly. This verse is a reminder that God goes with you into the conversation.

ReflectWhich part of the interview conversation would you like to place in God's hands before you begin?

The king asked, “Well, how can I help you?” With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, “If it please the king, and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.”

Nehemiah 2:4-5

Nehemiah served the king of Persia, and when the king asked him a direct question, Nehemiah prayed before he answered. It was likely a quick, silent prayer in the middle of the conversation. Then he made a clear and respectful request. His example shows that prayer and preparation work together, and that a short prayer in the moment is always welcome.

ReflectWhat short, simple prayer could you pray right before you answer your first question?

Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Colossians 4:6

Paul encourages believers to speak with grace and warmth in every conversation. A footnote in this translation explains that the Greek says seasoned with salt, a picture of words that are pleasant and thoughtful. In an interview, gracious and attractive speech means listening well, answering kindly, and treating everyone you meet, from the receptionist to the hiring manager, with respect.

ReflectWho might you meet during your interview day, and how could you show them grace and kindness?

Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people.

Proverbs 22:29

This proverb celebrates people who are skilled and diligent in their work. In the ancient world, serving a king was a high honor, and the proverb says good work opens doors like that. It is an encouraging verse when preparing for an interview, because the skills you have built over time are part of what you bring into the room.

ReflectWhat skill or experience are you grateful to bring into this opportunity?

The Lord will work out his plans for my life—for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.

Psalm 138:8

David wrote this verse as a statement of trust. Whatever the outcome of a particular day, he believed the Lord was working out his plans. He grounds that confidence in God's faithful love, which endures forever. Reading this after an interview can bring peace while you wait to hear back, because the next step is in good hands.

A closer look

Going a little deeper.

Scripture is full of people who stood before kings, leaders, and decision makers. Joseph explained Pharaoh's dreams, Daniel served in the court of Babylon, Esther approached the king, and Nehemiah asked for permission to rebuild Jerusalem. Each of them prepared carefully, spoke honestly, and relied on God. Their stories show that preparation and faith are partners. Researching the company, practicing answers, and praying for wisdom all belong together.

It can also help to remember that an interview is a two way conversation. You are learning whether a role is a good fit, just as the employer is learning about you. Praying for clarity, not only for a yes, invites God to guide the whole process. Many people find it helpful to write a favorite verse on a note card and read it just before the interview begins.

Ways to keep these verses close. Choose one verse to read each morning this week and notice how it shapes your day. Write a favorite verse on a card for your desk, mirror, or nightstand. Share one verse with a friend or family member who might enjoy it, along with a short personal note.

A prayer

Father, thank you for this opportunity. Go with me into this interview. Give me clear thoughts, honest words, and a calm and gracious spirit. Help me listen well and answer well, and lead me to the place where I can serve you best. Amen.
