Bible verses About Marriage

These verses describe the kind of love that makes a marriage strong, patient, kind, and faithful. They are a gift for couples at any stage.

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

Genesis 2:24

This verse describes marriage from the very beginning of Scripture. Two people leave, join, and become united. Jesus himself quoted this verse when he spoke about marriage.

ReflectHow might couples nurture the unity this verse describes in the everyday routines of marriage?

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Solomon observes that two are better than one. Partners help each other succeed and lift each other up. It is a practical picture of companionship.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:12

The triple-braided cord is a favorite image at weddings. Two people standing together are strong, and with God as the third strand, stronger still. It is a beautiful picture of a marriage centered on God.

ReflectWhat practices help keep God at the center of a marriage, like the third strand in the cord?

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

Ephesians 4:2-3

Paul describes the qualities that keep relationships strong, humility, gentleness, and patience. Love makes allowance for faults. Unity is maintained through peace.

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.

Colossians 3:14

Paul describes love as the garment that holds every other virtue together. Clothing ourselves with love is a daily choice. It brings harmony to every relationship.

ReflectWhat would clothing yourself with love look like in one specific relationship this week?

let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

Mark 10:9

Jesus emphasizes that marriage is something God joins together. It is a reminder of the sacredness of the covenant. Many couples include it in their wedding vows.

ReflectHow can couples protect what God has joined together through daily choices and habits?

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.

1 Peter 4:8

Peter calls deep love the most important thing. Love covers a multitude of sins, offering grace instead of keeping score. It is a practical word for marriage and friendship.

ReflectIs there a small offense you could choose to cover with love rather than keep score of?
A closer look

Going a little deeper.

Scripture describes marriage as a covenant, a committed partnership built on love, faithfulness, and grace. These verses touch on unity, companionship, patience, and forgiveness, qualities that strengthen any marriage over time. The triple-braided cord from Ecclesiastes is a lovely reminder that a marriage centered on God has added strength. Couples sometimes choose one verse to read together each week, or pray one of these passages over each other. Anniversaries are also a meaningful time to revisit them. Small, shared habits of faith can build a strong foundation for many years together.

Strong marriages are rarely built on grand gestures alone. They are built through thousands of small moments, a kind word, a shared prayer, a patient response, and a willingness to forgive. These verses can serve as a reminder of what matters most when life gets busy. Many couples also find it meaningful to attend a marriage retreat or study a book of the Bible together.

Ways to keep these verses close. Choose one verse to read each morning this week and notice how it shapes your day. Write a favorite verse on a card for your desk, mirror, or nightstand. Share one verse with a friend or family member who might enjoy it, along with a short personal note.

A prayer
