Bible verses for Sleep

Rest is a gift from God, and Scripture often speaks of lying down in peace. These verses are good to read before bed.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

Psalm 4:8

David wrote this as an evening prayer. He describes lying down in peace and sleeping because God alone keeps him safe. It is a lovely verse to pray at the end of a day or before an important event.

ReflectConsider reading this verse tonight as the last thing you do before sleep, placing the night in God's care.

You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly.

Proverbs 3:24

This proverb promises restful sleep to those who walk in wisdom. It pictures lying down without fear. It is a gentle verse to read before bed.

ReflectWhat small change to your evening routine might help you rest more peacefully?

It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Psalm 127:2

Solomon reminds readers that endless striving is not the path to security. God gives rest to his loved ones. It is a reminder that rest is a gift to receive, not a reward to earn.

ReflectIs there an area where you could trust God more and rest instead of working late into the night?

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

This is one of the warmest invitations in all of Scripture. Jesus addresses everyone who is weary, without conditions or qualifications, and offers rest as a gift from himself. The rest he describes goes deeper than a good night's sleep. It is the settled rest of the soul that comes from being near him.

ReflectWhere in your week could you build a small moment of rest with Jesus, perhaps a quiet walk, a pause before a meal, or a few minutes of prayer?

He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.

Psalm 121:3-4

God never sleeps or grows tired. The one who watches over us is always attentive. That truth makes it easier for us to rest.

ReflectHow does knowing God never sleeps make it easier for you to rest tonight?

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1

This verse pictures resting in the shadow of the Almighty. It is a beautiful image to carry into sleep. Living close to God brings rest.

ReflectConsider reading this verse as the last thing you read tonight, picturing yourself resting in God's shadow.

I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 63:6-7

David describes lying awake and thinking about God through the night. Rather than restlessness, his thoughts turn to joy. The shadow of God's wings becomes a place of song.

ReflectIf you wake in the night, consider turning your thoughts toward God with a short prayer of thanks.
A closer look

Going a little deeper.

Rest is woven into creation itself. God rested on the seventh day, and Scripture repeatedly presents sleep as a gift from him. These verses remind us that God never sleeps, which frees us to rest. A short evening routine can help, putting the phone away a little earlier, reading one verse, and giving God the day's remaining thoughts in prayer. Some people like to keep a verse card on the nightstand. Others read Psalm 4 verse 8 as a closing line each night. Small, consistent habits like these can make bedtime more peaceful.

A quiet room and a calm mind are good companions for rest.

Ways to keep these verses close. Choose one verse to read each morning this week and notice how it shapes your day. Write a favorite verse on a card for your desk, mirror, or nightstand. Share one verse with a friend or family member who might enjoy it, along with a short personal note.

A prayer

Lord, thank you for this day. I give you everything that is still on my mind. Watch over me tonight and give me peaceful sleep. Amen.
