A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.
Proverbs 17:17
This proverb describes the kind of friend everyone hopes to have, someone loyal in every season. The second line compares that loyalty to family, a brother born to help when times are hard. True friendship shows up not only for celebrations but also for difficult days. It is a wonderful verse to send to a friend who has been there for you.

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
John 15:12-13
Jesus spoke these words to his disciples on the night before the cross. He sets the standard for love by pointing to his own example, and then he describes the greatest love possible, giving one's life for friends. Within hours he would do exactly that. A few verses later he calls his followers friends, which makes this passage both a command and a beautiful invitation.
ReflectWhat is one practical way you could show love to a friend this week, following the example of Jesus?
As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 27:17
Iron tools were sharpened by rubbing them against other iron, and the process made them more useful. Good friends do something similar for each other. They encourage growth, ask honest questions, and help each other become wiser and stronger. This verse celebrates friendships that make both people better.
ReflectWho sharpens you, and how might you encourage that friend in return?
Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.
Romans 12:10
Paul describes love among believers with two vivid phrases, genuine affection and delight in honoring each other. The word he uses for affection is a family word, the kind of warm love shared between brothers and sisters. Taking delight in honoring others turns friendship into a joyful contest of kindness, where each person looks for ways to celebrate the other.

The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.
Proverbs 27:9
Perfume and incense were precious in the ancient world and filled a room with a pleasant fragrance. This proverb says that the honest, caring advice of a friend is just as sweet. Heartfelt counsel comes from someone who knows you and wants the best for you. It is a lovely picture of how good friends bring something refreshing into our lives.

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Paul wrote this letter to a young church that was growing in faith, and he notices that they are already encouraging each other. He tells them to keep going. Encouragement is a simple way to strengthen any friendship, a kind word, a note, a prayer, or a reminder of God's love. Small acts of encouragement add up over time.
